the moon is the next antarctica

I know someone who went to Antarctica. Shortly after she got back, she told one of her clients, a well traveled client at that, where she'd been. The client said she’d been, too. No surprise there. Then, without missing a beat or mentioning a penguin, she said, “I didn’t like it. There was no culture.”

This is one of my alltime favorite travel lines. The preposterousness of a supposedly sophisticated woman saying this is too much. Antarctica. No culture. I would hope not. Then Antarctica would no longer be Antarctica.

I’d never felt a polar pull. But when my acquaintance showed me her photographs, I experienced a tug. I imagined the cold, damp air entering my lungs and the thwack of the Zodiac against the water and the expanse of the glacial landscape.

Here’s a chance to win a $15,000 towards a Quark Expeditions expedition to Antarctica. That’s an expedition, not a cruise. The occasion is Quark’s 15th anniversary.
